HAIR LOSS IN WOMEN

Hair loss is a major problem in both men and women, with causes that are often common. Nevertheless, there are differences in the way alopecia sets in, as well as in the treatments offered.

Diffuse loss

In most cases, hair loss in women is diffuse, reducing the density of follicular units overall including in the usual donor area at the back of the skull.

In androgenetic alopecia in women, hair loss is characterised by a central (Christmas tree) reduction and respect for the frontal line.

The stages of this alopecia are listed in the Ludwig classification.

Frequently, a hereditary character is found in patients with these disorders.

Sometimes, there are hormonal disorders (particularly at the level of male hormones: androgens and their receptors) resulting in clinical and biological abnormalities, which may require a specific work-up and endocrinological management.

Localised loss

In other situations, hair loss is more localised, the main causes on healthy hair are mechanical.

For example, traction alopecia or trichotillomania are common diagnoses.

Important points:

  • Diffuse or localised loss
  • Ludwig classification
  • Depending on the mechanism of hair loss and the degree of alopecia, a treatment plan will be proposed that may combine medication and/or hair implantology.
