FINASTERIDE: WHY?

Finasteride is an oral treatment that aims to block the progression of androgenetic alopecia .

FINASTERIDE: ITS MODE OF ACTION

Its mechanism of action is to inhibit the enzyme 5-alpha reductase type 2 (present in the hair follicles of the scalp). It thus blocks the peripheral transformation of testosterone into another androgen, dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which is responsible for androgenetic alopecia. The benefit of this treatment is a reduction in the circulating level of DHT, and therefore a stabilization of hair loss and sometimes a satisfactory regrowth in quantity and quality.

FINASTERIDE: ITS PRESCRIPTION

Its dosage is 1mg per day (oral intake).
It cannot be prescribed to women of childbearing age due to a significant risk to a potential fetus (teratogenic, impaired virilization). For postmenopausal women suffering from androgenetic alopecia, no benefit has been reported.
It is not advisable to stop it without medical advice, as the risk is a significant drop and therefore the loss of benefits obtained.
Side effects are very rare (<2%) but should be considered (breast discomfort sometimes associated with an increase in volume, change in texture and/or volume of sperm, decrease in libido, erectile dysfunction). In the vast majority of cases, these rare side effects are reversible.
The combination of minoxidil 5% and finasteride increases their effectiveness against hair loss.
