Hair transplantation is a treatment option for baldness and other hair problems. This hair restoration technique aims to rebuild harmonious hair , to thicken an area of thinning or very fine hair and to counteract hair loss due to heredity, pathology (alopecia, alopecia areata, trichotillomania), trauma, etc.
It consists of taking hair follicles from an area with dense hair (called the donor area) to reimplant them in a thinning or bald area, called the recipient area.
Due to genetic predisposition, the donor area is little or not affected by androgenetic alopecia (the main cause of hair loss) and allows for lifelong collection. This area is generally located in the Hippocratic crown (at the back of the skull), but the sample can also come from areas of the body covered with hair (this is called Body Hair Transplantation).
Improvements in hair surgery techniques now make it possible to achieve a natural and harmonious result, taking into account the aesthetics of the face and the stage of alopecia.
To date, the two main techniques for harvesting follicular units (FU) from the donor area are:
After the grafts have been removed from the donor area , they are carefully implanted in the recipient area. These different follicular extraction techniques are performed under anesthesia for a completely painless surgical procedure.
Hair transplantation can be supplemented by medical treatment to limit hair loss and promote hair growth: mesotherapy sessions, finasteride, minoxidil, or even in certain specific cases.
