A good candidate for a hair transplant: a question of indication

My Hair Medical, a clinic specialising in hair transplants in Lyon, aims to offer patients hair transplant expertise.
In hair implantology, as in any medical-surgical activity, the crucial parameter is the indication. The right indication will optimise the chances of a good result. The wrong indication will always lead to a poor result.

Also, it is imperative to be examined by a physician who will be able to give you a precise, clear and appropriate opinion respecting the rules of good practice and medical ethics: this is the philosophy of our team.

Good candidate for hair transplantation: the main criteria

  1. Age of the patient : Patients who are too young (under 25) are generally not good candidates. Often their hair loss has not fully stabilised and it is difficult to anticipate the final stage of a patient's baldness. If hair is transplanted too early, there is a risk that the grafts will be unevenly distributed (for example, too dense in the front part, while the baldness continues in the back). For these patients, medicinal techniques (Minoxidil, Finasteride), injections (mesotherapy) or photobiomodulation (LLLT) are good alternatives.
  2. Donor area: The density of the donor area is very important in anticipating the number of grafts that the doctor can take without making the area unsightly and too bald. Patients with a density of less than 60 UF/cm2 are considered poor density candidates.
  3. Receiving area: Hair loss must be as stabilised as possible. The balder the recipient area, the larger the graft will be. Sometimes even the bald area will only be partially covered with variable density. It is essential to have a clear and rigorous treatment plan to which the patient adheres, otherwise the level of satisfaction may be reduced.
  4. Hair: The hair itself will be important in terms of the desired result: its organisation (average number of hairs per UF, number of multiple UFs), colour, thickness, type (curly hair provides better coverage than straight hair).
  5. Skin colour: The contrast between the skin and the hair will also play a role in the final result. In fact, low hair density will be less noticeable for black hair on black skin than for black hair on white skin.
  6. Scalp laxity: For the FUT technique, this parameter is important, as it determines the possibility of tension-free suturing.

Unfortunately, not all patients are good candidates for a hair implant procedure.

Our medical team will be able to inform you and explain why it may not be advisable to undertake a procedure at a given time. Technical developments and research sometimes make it possible to offer alternatives to a patient who was initially rejected.
