FUE TRANSPLANT: DEFINITION

FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) hair transplantation is a more recent technique for harvesting grafts (or follicular units: FU) used in hair transplantation. This is the so-called " hair by hair " technique. Its main advantage is that it does not cause scarring on the scalp.
In FUE, the donor area can be the classic Hippocratic crown (temporo-occipital area), but also areas of the body covered with hair (torso, back, beard, etc.), in which case we speak of BHT (Body Hair Transplantation).
It is possible to take small amounts of UF for scalp repair cases or very localized transplants (eyebrows, beard, etc.). Large sessions in the case of advanced baldness are possible.

FUE HAIR TRANSPLANT: THE TECHNIQUE

This hair transplant procedure is performed at the clinic without hospitalization. It is performed under local anesthesia with specific microsurgery equipment. It is recommended to shave the donor and recipient areas (approximately 1 mm in length) beforehand to facilitate graft collection and implantation.
For aesthetic purposes, it is essential to use high-precision harvesting punches, adapted to the hair being harvested. Typically, the punches used range from 0.70 to 1.00 mm. If they are too thin, there is a risk of transection and the possibility of not removing the graft properly. If they are too wide, we no longer talk about FUE, and the incisions risk leaving a moth-eaten scar.
We use high-precision equipment offered by the most renowned brand in this field ( Cole Instruments ) to combine safety and results.
Once the graft has been removed, the implantation techniques in the recipient area (bald or thinning area) are identical to those used in FUT .

FUE: POST-OPERATIVE EFFECTS

The post-operative effects of an FUE transplant are relatively simple (redness, scabs, edema), allowing a rapid return to physical activity, without major work stoppage.
It is important to follow the pre- and post-operative instructions given and explained by the medical team.

Important points:

  • No linear scalp scar
  • Sample not visible even with short hair
  • Simple postoperative suites
  • Interesting for repair cases (scars, burns, etc.)
  • Longer operating time than in FUT
  • High-precision gesture requiring concentration and dexterity
